The intervention of this team is minimal on the periphery of the building in order to preserve the balance with the residential environment. The expansion is therefore mainly located in the central body of the building.
This approach allows all the common functions of the Faculty to be grouped in the center of the building, both in the new and existing parts. This creates a strong core that facilitates exchanges between the different schools of the Faculty.
The project foresees the creation of two main circulation axes: one going from Côte Sainte-Catherine to Louis-Collin, the other connecting the entrance on Darlington to the new H.E.C. school.
This project includes the integration of industrial design through prototypes of lighting and street furniture.
(CCC text)
The jury appreciated the architectural gesture behind this project, the creation of a space that establishes a gap between the existing building and the addition that will be very dramatic. The resulting organization of the space is clear. However, the jury questions the interest of orienting the building towards an interior space, which certainly has its value but whose relevance is perhaps not obvious in an environment that is, all in all, pleasant and on which the various functions of the building could open up.
For some, the articulation of the volumes at the back is excessive and the multiplicity of gestures detracts from the reading of a master idea. Others, however, appreciated the didactic approach of presenting different compositions in this way and found the proposal stimulating.
The minimal intervention in the facade is questioned; the gesture lacks audacity, does not initiate any dialogue between contemporary and traditional architecture and refuses to give an image to the Faculty. It evacuates, in a way, the problem of contemporary intervention on the heritage.
Inside, behind the main entrance, the orientation is not easy and one feels that one has, rightly or wrongly, privileged the back entrance.
The jury appreciated the structure of the landscape space, its clear hierarchy from woodland to a well-defined and sunny optional space, including a grassy area as well as the concrete terrace extending the new building. In this sense, the bridge in the landscape space is perceived as an important gesture by some, while for others, it remains a gratuitous gesture that adds nothing to the architecture or the landscape.
The location of the greenhouse is viewed favorably, as is the landscaping along Darlington Avenue, which attempts to weave links between the project and the surrounding residential area.
