The Mount Royal hike
We live in an unprecedented context. Cities are transforming, adapting and showing signs of resilience at every opportunity. But what happens in an unexpected health emergency?
Currently, Mount Royal Avenue, which is heavily dedicated to automobiles, presents significant challenges in a health context because of its narrow sidewalks and gathering spaces that do not promote the required social distancing. Indeed, in the face of the pandemic, the commercial street, affected by this crisis situation, is extinguished. Our objective is to transform the current identity and functionality of this street in order to better adapt it to the sanitary requirements. Thus, our vision focuses on the revitalization of the public space and its businesses. This is why we propose to transform the street into a pedestrian street in order to encourage active transportation and to allow businesses to take over the public space. Our development concept is deployed mainly on a 500-metre stretch of the street, between Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Saint-Denis Street. We propose to recognize the immediate surroundings with that of the merchants by maximizing the opportunity that each public space that the avenue can offer. A 3.5 meter wide fast moving traffic is proposed following the distancing guidelines and unfolds sinuously in front of the shops to guide the traffic and enhance the human experience.

The concept was considered interesting and could be transposed to other areas of the city, but the conversion of Mount Royal Avenue to a pedestrian street did not seem feasible for the jury. However, they appreciated the night rendering and the richness of the overall plan.
