A city located among the Rocky Canadian shield, Sudbury is an aged city, its roots deeply entrenched through its history, the people, and its well-known industries. The rock on which the city was built upon has been the cornerstone of Sudbury's development and growth. Centered first around the Timber trade, and upon the discovery of Nickel, it developed into a Mining Town, mining and refining or mineral ores such as Nickel, Platinum, Silver, and Gold.
However, with the 21st century, the City of Sudbury has begun rebranding its image, a reflection of its new growth, to transform into an International City of tomorrow. It is through efforts such as reforestation, diversification of Industry, and the expression of the city's personality through its art, that we can begin to catch glimpses of a future Sudbury, a City of International Standards, Values in sustainability, and Merit.
A resource-rich city, Sudbury Industries are based on extracting raw materials from the earth, from Timber to Metals. The extraction of such resources means our Environment is in the process of ensuring the development of a successful City. However, our 2020 vision for Sudbury is not destruction, but rather restoration and the evolution of Sudbury into an Internationally sustainable and environmentally forward and friendly city.
Is with his goal in mind that we would like to further this vision of Sudbury 2020, by presenting the, a solution, the SILVER RAIL PARK, a vision through the green.
Located at the heart of the city is SUDBURY's train yards, a land of untapped potential. It is on this site, that we would like to propose the construction of the new Urban Transportation Park, as a hub of the community, of new opportunities and Transportation.
It is our hope through this design to further Sudbury's Developmental Goals by creating a Green Space that can serve as a Community Plaza, a place of business, and as a placemark of Sudbury's Reforestation Plan, a place to celebrate Sudbury and all of its peoples.
Currently, the Sudbury Train Station site is mainly used as a train cargo, and as a transportation line on the weekends. It furthermore serves as a Farmers Market on the weekend, and as extra parking space when required. With the surge of COVID virus cases, the site has become further unused, especially as large gatherings spaces, such as the adjacent Ice Rink was prohibited to be used.
Second, the train tracks divide the city at its center, distancing the residents from the core of the city center where many of its daily activities and jobs are located. Its location restricts access into the city core, which encourages residents and visitors alike to rely on vehicular transportation to quickly reach their destinations.
Third, with the proposed demolition of the ICE RINK, and the new development of the Community Center, Art Gallery, and other amenities on Elgin Street, the Sudbury Train Station does not positively reflect the changes and the need for communal spaces, current developments are responding to. It stands as a juxtaposition to the people and pedestrian quality of Minto Street. In conclusion, the Train Yards is not a representation of the image of the future that Sudbury wishes to keep.
Therefore, through the Silver Rail Park Proposal, we wish to address the usage of the site, by converting the brownfield site into a Reforested Green Park. Based on the adjacent public space, we will allocate to park into several functional spaces, from communal gardens, skate parks, a large plaza for public activities, and festivals, with a permanent location for the Farmers Market. By implementing these programs into the park, we wish to create family-friendly space, that will new residents and target a younger and more varied demographic, who choose to live, work and play at the heart and center of Sudbury.
The Silver Rail Park will also address the separation between residential and commercial zones of the city. The park will act as a bridge, with access for all, whether tourists or residents to, explore and learn more about the city and the wonderful people who live in it. We believe that through the inclusion and design of the Fast-Rail Train System, which will be located under the park, we hope to attract many more commuters into Sudbury to enjoy the sights and fares of Sudbury
As reforestation is a key feature of the park, we intend that the site is to be remediate actively and passively by applying phytoremediation methods. Vegetation grown will absorb carbon from the air, increasing our carbon capture, and absorb chemicals from the brownfield site, which will assist in the cleaning of the site over time.
Other features that will be included on the site will be a RAINWATER COLLECTION System and Revenue Potential from the FARMER'S MARKET and other POP-UP shops located across the site.
RAINWATER COLLECTION:
Across the site There will be systems of rainwater harvesting, to reduce the amount of potable water use. These rainwater harvesters will be located on our buildings and stored using a channel drain. The water would then be filtered and used as a greywater system for typical use such as sinks and irrigation for native plants outside.
URBAN TRANSPORTATION:
the goal of this design is to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the air. By reducing the amount of parking space and providing more walkable roadways and path, it will reduce the amount of gas emitted into the air. By providing more walkable areas, people will have more places to explore and interact with new activities along the way. One main feature that our site created is a new VR rail system for locals to use. People now have new locations, through which to access transportation and provides a quicker way to get from one place to another.
REVENUE POTENTIAL:
The Farmer's Market, located by the Farmer's plaza, will be outfitted with Trailer Shops, which are pop-up, movable shops, that will be available for rent for a fee. However, the Farmer's plaza also provides space for Sellers and Shoppers to present and share their goods with Park users or even visitors during events. will be temporary a be rented out across the site by creating this new site it will bring in revenue for the city of Sudbury.
