To resolve the Climate Crisis, we must electrify. The most common material in modern lithium batteries is nickel. Sudbury has the world's largest nickel smelter. Research has shown that if we aggressively introduce electrification we can reduce carbon production by 70 to 80% by 2035. By 2050 we can avert the Climate Crisis. We only have a short period of time to reverse Global Warming. By intensifying and becoming more walkable, bike able and transit oriented Sudbury can incorporate the best urban characteristics of Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto while also addressing the Climate Emergency.
Sudbury is a hybrid city. Indigenous (Ojibwe), Francophone and Anglophone people were present in the early days of Sudbury. Today Sudbury is a diverse mix of English, Scottish, Irish, German, Italian, Finnish and other nationalities. My Estonian parents came to Sudbury from Sweden in 1953, the year I was born in Copper Cliff. They were Displaced Persons (DPs) who fled Russian Communism and fled to Germany, then Denmark and finally Sweden where they applied to come to Canada. An uncle was already living in Sudbury. Sudbury is uniquely Canadian. It is truly a convivial city.
Removal and reuse of the rail marshaling lines from the centre of town will free up substantial land for redevelopment and native planted park land with forests, native meadows and active recreation, including winter skating. In a Post Covid-19 world the new development would be 45% native green space for ventilation and social distancing. The remaining 55% will contain the building program of library/art gallery/ conference centre and performance centre. All buildings will have active and/or passive green roofs.
Conservation Sudbury is active encouraging tree planting. This competition entry proposes to greatly accelerate tree and native meadow replanting. Sudbury has been active in replanting the dead zone of smelter acid rain since 1978. There is still much to renaturalize. To accelerate a company called Flash Forest is committed to planting a billion trees to sequester carbon and fight global warming.
To fight climate change we must live in more dense arrangements that are pedestrian oriented. The Brewery lofts by architects alliance is a prime example of adaptive reuse and appropriate density for a walkable downtown.
