A Green-Way Forward
Project overlook
Sudbury's rich landscape is a gem of the North. Our connection to the natural world permeates the city and shapes it's construction. Embracing this aspect through architecture pays homage to our history and sets the groundwork for the future. While occupying the perceived border between Northern and Southern Ontario, it should be Sudbury's mission to be a magnet for future artisans and provide growth to other remote communities; these changes begin at the heart of the city. Merging the luxuries both of urban conveniences and the tranquility of the natural environment is an opportunity to capitalize on.
Thesis statement
The core theme of the project is the incorporation of the greenway into other public spaces and infrastructures such as the entertainment sector and affordable housing. This project creates an urban core that is engaging to the growing community. Through the extension of the greenways and the connection of the waterways we are able to use the urban guidelines and principles to create a more natural environment in Sudbury's urban core. The greenway would bring back the natural beauty of the North into the downtown area and it would provide a conceptual scaffolding for Sudbury's expansion. The extension of the greenway would bring forth an entertainment plaza, a community/market space and a residential square.
Entertainment Plaza
The Entertainment plaza is an extension of the greenway that is home to the new Sudbury arena, small outlet malls and local restaurants. The space would also include small gardens and lounging spaces which would capitalize on the regreening initiative in Sudbury. The entertainment plaza is a welcoming and relaxing space in the midst of constant movement. It is also the new home for the Sudbury arena making it more accessible for the surrounding community with three access points, for vehicles and pedestrians. The creation of these spaces would require the removal of the rail lands that have not been properly utilized for transportation, this rerouting minimizes the extra noise and air.
Market place
The Community Space is an extension of the greenway that includes a market space, lounging areas, an outdoor auditorium, child activity circles and a community garden. The community space is directly linked to the entertainment plaza with several pathways including the greenway. The community space would be home to a permanent space for a more welcoming market area. The community space is a way to bring back the natural environment that can be found in the surrounding areas of the urban core, as well as promotes an environmentally friendly approach to the daily commute. The creation of these spaces would require the removal of the rail lands that have not been properly utilized for transportation, this rerouting minimizes the extra noise and air pollution, as well as unnecessary traffic.
RESIDENTIAL SQUARE
The Residential square extension of the greenway would replace the existing Elm Place in favour of family-style apartments with in-house services and accommodations, as well as small retail locations for Sudbury's local business owners. The main public library would also be relocated to this district and would be geared towards hands-on learning and work areas for the community. The greenway would travel through this square, providing efficient pedestrian access from the downtown. This path would then extend into the rotary park trail, connecting the New Sudbury area for future expansionsions.
