The plan for Sudbury 2050 starts from the keywords "Diversification in Urban Speed", which divides into high (High-speed Train/Commuting Tube), middle (Freight Train/Tram), slow (Park Path/Sky walkway/Bath Path/Urban Sidewalk) and zero (Solar Energy/Wind Energy/Stormwater system). At the same time, the city will act as a symbol of integration of children, young adults, and older people. With the development of the diverse urban speed and mixed power from the people, we call the future Sudbury "The Hybrid City".
The existing urban model faces huge challenges. The traffic speed in the city is mainly divided into freight rail speed and general driving speed, which makes the urban structure relatively monotonous and hard to carry out the next round of urban upgrading. The entry point is to upgrade the existing "freight track" system. We propose to add a high-speed railway track to the original freight track, which can shorten the time people spend in traffic, and lay a good foundation for the dynamic adjustment of population structure in the future.
At the top, the rail structure is used to construct the city central park. The urban centre planning will continue to extend end relying on the central park of the city by increasing the population density of the overall urban core area. The urban sky garden will be extended to the urban high-density area together with the tube network rail transit to jointly build the urban air green corridor. Due to COVID-19, the future "centralized" park model will be replaced by "linear" parks, reducing urban agglomeration, which contributes to an urban landscape belt model.
The aim is to re-engineer the industry system and the population structure in Sudbury and transform the traditional resource-dependent city into a "hybrid" city with resources, nursing, tourism, mining, merchandise, administration, etc. The city will develop a connection with surrounding cities, as well as the connection between rural and urban areas to enrich the industry type and increase population mobility. The new urban centre system will drive rapid economic development, provide a unique innovative and diversified lifestyle, and act as an important link in the new Toronto-Ottawa-Sudbury triangle development.
