It is high time to release Sudbury´s enormous untapped potential. Being one of the largest cities in Ontario and Canada itself, we find a beautiful city lost in old memories with no clear path to follow. With those premises we begin the project with one clear idea in mind, to regenerate the center of the city which is now divided physically by a massive railway. We will implement a series of urban planning initiatives to rehabilitate the citycenter with new residential areas for families, workers and students, new centers of economic activity and large green areas for recreational use. Each one will have a unique and positive impact on the city. We kept one tram lane to maintain the connection between the west, the northwest and the beautiful Lake Ramsey in the southeast.
Lakes have a significant presence on the area, and we will enhance that characteristic through our design.
The FIVE INITIATIVES that we proposed are:
1. To create an elevated platform following the established route of the old railway. This will increase the transit flow while allowing the upper level that will be utlizied by pedestrians. This level will include urban equipment for a more comfortable experience and green elements that provide shade and shelter. To access this upper level, we proposed concrete helicoidal ramps, so they serve as an accessibility ramp and emergency exit located at intervals of approximately 450m. Underneath this platform there is an express lane to be used by motor vehicles, bicycles, scooters, and anything else that might require a greater velocity. This lane will be shared with the tram. On the West side of the platform we find a lookout point that offers the user a new perspective between the old and new city. It also serves as a new meeting point for the residents and tourists. The East side of this elevated deck descends to the ground level so the transition between the artificial element and nature is seamless.
2. In the newly liberated space that the railway has left on the South area, we will build four residential towers. Each tower will have a different purpose while all of them are regulated by the competent authorities, so the rent conditions remain affordable.
- Students East Tower and Students West Tower will be for students actively enrolled in the universities of Sudbury.
- Employees Tower will house the people who work in any of the newly created jobs at the Five Landmarks that areproposed and subsequently explained.
- Interns Tower will be used by persons having technical skills allowing them to earn different internship programs that
the new businesses will offer.
3. The massive void that is unearthed in the West area after removing the railway will be used to create a new living center called Housing by the Park. It will feature newly developed green areas, residential buildings with public facilities along with commercial and office buildings. Form follows function. The shape of the buildings comes from thermodynamic analysis of sun and wind.
4. Housing by the Lake is an innovative concept that the city did not have before. Now we offer our community the opportunity to enjoy the lake without leaving the city. We propose a series of retreat cabins where the locals and the foreigners cohabitate. Their configuration adapts to each individual so we can find single, group, family and communal retreat cabins. The building type is common to all of them. It relies on an external laminated wood structure which also covers the underneath enclosed space. This way we can enjoy several scenarios in one place: We have a cozy patio that allows us to have privacy when needed, we can enjoy the public outdoor space, the pergola uses the external structure as the element of transition that joins together private and public, outdoors and indoors.
5. The last initiative we propose is the one that involves economic activities as well as new leisure and cultural centers.
- The Art Gallery is a nod to the Housing by the Lake, using the same structural type, but the interior is unique unto itself. It is a new concept of an art museum in the city. It is a digital art gallery where the user can interact with the art, as well as play with digital video animations and performances. The materials used will change depending on the artist, so we will be able to find installations such as lasers, water, music, visual effects and so on.
-The Greenhouse exhibits its function as a tropical oasis. It can accommodate varieties of plants and animals that will be inside an elastic ETFE membrane anchored to the external circular structure. The user can admire this beauty from the promenade created on the perimeter of the building. The path finishes at the top of the building, offering a stunning view of the city and the building itself.
-The Great Mountain is a man-created hollowed mountain to host a center for adventure activities. We start the circuit on the ground level and we make our ascent around the face of the mountain until the first exit that leads to an activity. Once there we can decide to participate or keep ascending to the next. Along the route we will find several exits related to activities such as hiking, climbing or walking. The intensity of each one will increase as we approach the top.
-The Observatories uniqueness consists primarily in its location in the middle of the lake. The effect that we receive is a glassed water lily floating as delicately as one in real nature. The complex hosts five buildings so we can cover a 360º view, that combined with the use of glass, allows us to admire the whole celestial dome.
-The Workshops are the support that the universities, companies, workers and new population needed. It is a complex of several buildings that host different areas and spaces specifically to work and share information. It can be used by whoever believes that it is the most convenient way to work and network. We know these initiatives will make a remarkable change in the city of Greater Sudbury that will be cherished and admired forever.
