ÉCOMMERÇANTE STREET
Re-imagining a street as emblematic as Notre-Dame Street provides us with an opportunity to envision a new street typology that can accompany the Borough of Lachine towards the new post-pandemic reality.
In this new typology, which we have named " Écommerçante " street, the environmental, commercial and social values needed to develop a sense of belonging, conviviality and interest in local commerce among neighbors and visitors would converge.
The " Écommerçante " street would feature sidewalks for pedestrians, a bicycle lane (connected to those leading to the banks of the Lachine Canal and to Lasalle Park), a public transport lane with delivery spaces and, finally, what we call the " Trame Multi ".
Inspired by the poles so characteristic of Notre-Dame Street, the "Trame Multi" would feature different types of wooden structures which, following an aesthetic thread, would be transformed into kiosks, play areas, terraces for restaurants, bus shelters, public benches, bicycle parking areas and so on.
Some of these structures would have green roofs or be covered with photovoltaic panels.
Light fixtures would echo these structures to complement and punctuate the space. They would have the particularity of having hinged panels on certain units so as to be able to close the street to traffic on pedestrian days, ephemeral events such as the Festival de Théâtre de rue, and so on.
We propose that the Marché public de Lachine be allowed to overflow onto the street, while inviting other businesses to do the same. The kiosks we're proposing could be used to showcase their products and services, offer pick-up services, and so on.
The increased presence of nature in the form of trees, plants and green roofs would also be very important in creating a sense of walking pleasure. What's more, this would enable us to create a vegetal cadence that would lead the street towards the future Écoquartier de Lachine-Est.
But an ecological vision of the street should not stop at the presence of plant elements alone. We need to rely on photo-voltaic panels, but also prioritize the presence of pedestrians, cyclists and public transit.
Finally, we mustn't neglect the rejuvenation of the Lachine Borough's new residents. For young families, it would be very attractive to have play areas next to shops. This would encourage them to want to spend time with their families on the street and enjoy the shops that line it. This would contribute to socialization and the development of local commerce, while fostering a sense of belonging and neighborhood life.
The aim of our project is to renew the identity of a street and a borough, without losing its essence. A project that's inclusive for long-time residents, welcoming for newcomers and attractive for visitors to the borough. A street reinvented so that local commerce can flourish, and where ecology and socialization find the place they deserve.

Jury members appreciated the simplicity and aesthetics of MP6 Arquitectura's "Écommerçante Street" proposal, but it didn't stand out in any other way.
