Passage Through the Earth
Passage Through the Earth connects the Winter Stadium, multi-sports complex, and outdoor stadium in a seamless manner. Step-free access, primarily to the stadium, guides visitors and fans through a series of ramps to the field. For those needing more assistance, lifts and escalators are available as secondary corridors.
As guests walk through the lobby, they will delve into the earth, which is grounded in the very soil it is played upon. The use of timber and stone reaffirm the connection to the planet and to the act of gathering to support a team together. At the field level, all modes of access converge, symbolic of the visitor's shared passion.
Within the lobby is the main team store, with additional restrooms and concessions. At three different levels, the lobby is connected to the multi-sports complex to allow for additional step-free access. Along the ramp circulation path, seating areas allow visitors to rest. Illustrated on the ground floor plan are tactile floor tiles for the visually impaired, which guide them throughout the building towards the stadium. Due to slope restrictions for ramps, the form spirals on itself, creating a central atrium dug into the hill. Programs are located adjacent to this central circulation path.
On the level of the field, the redesigned supporters stands allow for greater comfort and mobility. On the east side seating, there are 1848 fixed seats, with space for 186 wheelchairs on the field level and middle concourse. Restrooms, kitchens, and concession stands are located underneath. Opposite, the west side contains 1260 fixed seats, with space for 40 wheelchairs on field level, 7 concession stands, 16 single occupancy restrooms and 8 family or accessible restrooms, and a recalibration room. A larger space for those with sensory needs is adjacent to the multi-sports complex on the field level.
(From competitor's text)
The jury observed that the third building, with its expressive and massive form, is only lightly programmed aside from circulation. Although circulation is intricate and orientation can be difficult, the addition of elevators and escalators is welcomed. Street access to the bleachers through a passageway is deemed suitable.
