Resolutely contemporary, the library extension enhances the existing building while consolidating the cultural and civic center of Trait-Carré. The new library blends into the landscape, creating a public square where the old library meets. A new horizon in the landscape, it clarifies and enhances otherwise disjointed public spaces. While the reading room, located on the first floor, is in almost direct contact with the public space outside, the rest of the building is rather inward-looking, in order to control light. This reading room becomes the central core of the project: the heart of the building, it opens onto the various sections of the library and the mezzanine. The green roof, an extension of the landscape, is formed of angular planes and pierced by skylights. Ecological considerations bring a vision of sustainable development and social ecology to the project.
(CCC text)
The jury selected this project for its spatial potential and site integration: it appreciated the elegant link with the existing building, combined with the pedestrian passageway that provides an inviting approach sequence on both sides of the site. The sculptural appearance of the roof provides an architectural vocabulary sensitive to the environment. Functionally, the compact form offers greater design flexibility.
