In order to distinguish the new building from the old one, while at the same time harmonizing with it, the library extension leaves the old building unobstructed (even if it partially envelops two of its facades) by minimizing the "above-ground" volume. Slightly recessed into the ground, the new library creates a public square where the old college meets, a visual extension of the reading rooms inside. Focusing on the relationship between the landscape and the interior spaces, the project is open to the site, with a first floor and garden level offering visitors numerous views of the Trait-Carré landscape. The volume, rather massive and compact, is divided in height to open up views and illuminate interior spaces.
(CCC text)
The jury appreciated this project for its clever use of underground and above-ground areas. The result is a compact project that favors interior design potential and a diversity of atmospheres. Its architectural treatment is sober and denotes, through the slope of the roof, a sensitivity to the terrain.
