Description

With the ambition to embody and facilitate PHI's mission as a cultural incubator of diversity and multiplicities, the design builds upon the layers of human history, city-making, and place-making that are latent within the site. From the careful framing of the maple tree at the Montreal West of the site to the reimagination of the buildings along Bonsecours Street and Rue Saint- Paul Est, the design is defined by a hybridization of preservation and new infrastructure. Through mutating new and old forms, the project redefines what a radical re-use strategy for the 21st century could be, creating a new iconography for a 21st century cultural institution in an urban setting.

Instead of the typical strategies of removing and rebuilding, the new PHI re-uses and rethinks space, scale and identity to create a new means of collective gathering carved directly from within old Montreal. By designating the larger-scale components of the program such as the multi-function auditorium, multimedia presentation spaces, and the loading dock, as new structures onto the vacant parcels the site, the design strategy positions the existing buildings as the central gathering space of PHI Contemporary.

Debunking the widely accepted typology that abandoned industrial space is the only ideal environment for art display, the private residential homes are delicately preserved and reimagined into gallery spaces and communal workspaces which further connects the history of the city to the structure as a new cultural form. Functioning as memory vessels, these repurposed homes retain much of their original floor plates whilst providing a new institutional condition using sustainably sourced materials. Visitors will therefore be able to connect to history, memory, and the future projections of artists that will inhabit, create, display and challenge ways of thinking and being within society. With the strategic preservation of the existing stone walls and timber floor plates, these spaces contain both flexibility and capability of inspiring and displaying artistic invention, intervention and experimentation.

The juxtaposition of old and new within the hybridized structure merges together through a spiraling circulation system that allows for the display of PHI's artworks for public domain. The building culminates with a floating loggia type structure dubbed The Halo which creates a rooftop vista designed to accommodate PHI's artworks for public domain as well as education programs, small performances, and events. As a destination for the city to acknowledge its past and contemplate an inclusive, equitable future, The Halo signals transformation. It signifies the transformation of the site into something new without impacting the authentic fabric of the site therefore holding the very memory within the built environment.

In this sense, there is a coming together of the new with the tangible past of Old Montreal, creating a "third space" in which preservation and radical re-use merge together into a future driven destination of intellectual nourishment, creative artistic inspiration and community belonging. Ultimately, the proposed concept creates a hybrid urban ensemble that maintains the authenticity of the existing urban fragments through a mutated new form in which old and new, city and institution, interior and exterior are unified.

Jury Report

Stage 1

The proposal offers some beautiful spatial qualities and provides appropriate exhibition spaces for artists. The project is well rendered and demonstrates a high level of architectural resolution for this stage intended to be centred on spatial strategies.

This high level of resolution however, hinders the legibility of the vision and conceptual intentions driving the design. The concept and spatial strategies of the project were difficult to grasp and the jury would like to better understand how the proposal reflects the compelling discourse, visions and concepts expressed verbally in the video.

Several questions arose regarding how this proposal might develop in subsequent stages:
• Will PHI Contemporary's vision, ambitions and operations - focused on innovation, experimentation, decompartmentalization of disciplines and openness to all - be supported and expressed clearly and forcefully in the development of the architectural concept?
• Is the project sufficiently radical and progressive to address the changing future of contemporary cultural forces?
• Is the scale of this proposal, with its large atrium, wide staircases and sculptural roof, appropriate to the scale of the site and its urban context and reflective of PHI Contemporary's ethos?
• Is the deployment of the sculptural roof the right answer? Its function is questioned.

In addition to answering these questions, the development of the architectural concept will need to address the feasibility and functionality issues associated with the realization of the proposal. The complexity of the plan and the overall volumetry must be analyzed in relation to the scale of the site, the requirements of the spatial program and the heritage, urban and regulatory constraints. Further detail regarding the character of the proposal's façade and street presence will be required, along with further consideration of materiality in general.
