This is a beautiful concept whose main idea is to replace select bricks with glass containing fibre optic lighting, embossed with the first names and last initials of patients who built the wall. The jury felt that this idea provides a strong commemoration of the clients but respects their confidentiality and that of their surviving family members. This idea supports psychiatric consumer/survivor involvement in the proposal, which was a common theme among many entries. Glass panels near the Adelaide Street opening would contain the names of the winners of CAMH's Courage to Come Back Awards, which honour people who have overcome the challenges of mental illness and/or addiction and who use their experience to contribute to the community. Additional lighting along the interior of the wall (on the CAMH side) will provide safety at night, and will emphasize the shadows of the many trees found inside along the wall. The concept includes marking the original location of the walls, which are outside the current site boundaries, and special paving along a new pedestrian opening to Shaw Park, aligned with a lane just south of the Candy Factory building on Shaw Street. The concept also includes a bridge within the pedestrian opening, which appears to be flanked by glass markers. The glass markers were the one element that did not fully capture the jury's interest.
