Between shadow and light
The lighting concept takes place around the Gesù as a discovery venue. This objective is realised by an exteriorization of aesthetic features that can be found inside the building. To generate interest, the lighting was inspired by the chiaroscuro technique of the impressionist art, used inside the Gesù.
Pedestrians gradually discover the church, which reveals its façade at the last moment. For this reason, it is important to intervene at many scales to capture attention from Sainte-Catherine Street.
When a pedestrian walks in front of the church's square, a silhouette can be distinguished from the silent mass. This virtual crowd reflexion of the human activity is a repetition of the primary function of the square: a meeting, exchanging and sharing space.
