Tenebræ Elatum
The unique dual program (religious and secular) of the Gesù, offers a two part challenge: the unification of the building as a compositional whole, and the reinforcing of the identity of each distinct programmatic element of the building.
The lighting should not disengage itself from the architecture, it should reinforce the architectural composition, washing planes to define walls and accenting dominant lines to assert the organization of forms. To highlight the rich textured surfaces of the baroque vocabulary, fixtures are placed close to the walls, grazing the surfaces and emphasizing the shadows to define the relief.
While creating a disinct identity for the Gesù, the design also provides a vocabulary which helps to connect visually with the Quartier as a whole. Key elements include: red dots on the sidewalk, two programmable media displays at the venue entry, and the capacity to vary the lighting intensity and layering based on the space occupancy or Quartier events.
