Sudbury is a diversified city with recent focus on technology and education, while the backbone of the community has been mining. Over the recent decades the city has expanded, along with the population and cultures. As the city grew outwards, the downtown center became neglected in the wake of the urban sprawl. Now Sudbury is on the cusp of its urban redevelopment.
The North Ontario School of Architecture will be a catalyst for this change. Not only will the school of Architecture stand as an Institution for urban development, the architecture itself will act as a foundation for urban/economic change. The site we have chosen is a collection of desolate parking lots, neglected rear facades, and ignored service entrances. The N.O.S.O.A building will reclaim this urban space, reintegrate a student/consumer population into the heart of downtown Sudbury, become a cultural center for the town's citizens and tourist, and fuel an economic revitalization of the surrounding context.
