Aim:
To implement a site driven approach as a method of re-energizing the downtown area; therefore stimulating the cultural, social and financial growth with the city of Sudbury.
Concept:
Transform under-utilized parking areas into multi-functional spaces dedicated to education, retail and leisure. Provide accessibility to highway and public transportation systems by choice of site. Stimulate the interaction between students and the community by way of dedicated spaces for lectures, workshops and installations. Provide a better quality of live through the creation and re-development of public spaces and the inclusion of water elements that provide year-round entertainment as it morphs from a water park in the summer to an ice rink in the winter. Strategic site selection allows for future development and increased value of surrounding properties. Invigorate public areas by connecting the existing park with new public spaces. Parking necessities resolved via the creation of a structure parking system.
Design:
Designed in a vibrant and interactive manner, copper and nickel are used on the façade as a symbol of the city's cultural and historical value, thus creating a visual reminder of the local materials and their inherent prosperity. Atriums and interactive spaces enhance the feeling of openness thus promoting a sense of community. Glass walls and facades inject students into a stimulating environment of talent, intellect and creativity whilst connecting to the community and the outside environment via the buildings transparency. Flexible studio spaces, adjustable via moving walls, promote interaction amongst students and adjacent faculty. Sustainable living is encouraged through passive solar heat and maximum utilization of natural light. Locally available building materials are widely used throughout the building.
