Description

The three main goals for the new NOSOA building are to revitalize Sudbury's downtown, contribute to economic development, and encourage advancement in architectural practice and sustainable design. The building is designed to be contextually appropriate and beneficial to the local urban environment. It is an icon for the school and city bath aesthetically and sustainably.

Performance goals
- Use less electricity through the use of natural daylight.
- Lower heating costs by using heat gains from south facing facades.
- Eliminate cooling costs during the warmer months by providing natural ventilation through the stack effect.
- Reduce water usage by collecting rain water.
- Reduce heating and cooling with geothermal systems.

Sustainable goals
- Law embodied energy.
- Effective law-maintenance passive heating, ventilating, and daylighting.
- Use of local recyclable materials.
- Reduce water drainage from the site by having large naturally landscaped areas for drainage.
- Reduce carbon footprint by planting large amounts of vegetation.

Architectural design goals
- Iconic aesthetic and performance.
- Encourage sustainable awareness and learning for students and residents.
- Make an aesthetically pleasing contextual building while pushing the envelope in contemporary design.
- Create spaces that are nice to be in and conducive to learning.
- Show a contrast in the earth and the built environment and a possible relationship between the two.
