School of Architecture 01
In order to activate an urban revitalization of the new city of Greater Sudbury, a school of architecture is proposed as a source of revitalization and development in the city.
Location of the school
The NOSOA is proposed to be located at a triangular space in the parcel located between Cedar St. / Elgin St. South and Elgin St. North. This location was chosen because to the north-east there are currently empty parcels that could be used for future urban renewal. Locating the school in this area also integrates the school to the downtown district; as such acting as a gateway between the existing city center and the possible future development in west area parcels. The design of the new school will not only enhance existing retail, but will revitalize the city center by acting as cultural hub that will attract new businesses, commercial retail, and residences to the area.
Proposal
The building was designed with a philosophy of space compaction and natural circulation entry, in which the quality of the internal space was our main concern.
Our design centers the circulation of the building into one area with a central, wide ramp across the whole building, from which several smaller ramps bifurcates and leads the user directly into the area they wish to go. The central ramp also hosts most of the school activities, and its projected to have several lounge areas, and even an auditorium. From this central element, we then place the different zones the building program requires, in a harmonious way. The building program was divided in two different categories, based on the type of users and activities that they will host. The schools different programmatic areas are independent from each other and can only be reached by the central ramp. These areas were designed with a language similar to the ramp, and in several rooms, the slabs have subtle inclinations, connecting internal zones.
For the exterior language of the building we propose a space frame that will not only work as a structural system, but also as a skin to the building. The entrances and windows are the result of the manipulation and abstraction of this space frame. The design of this skin helps the entry of natural light and enhances the aesthetic of the building, creating complex and stimulating visual effects.
