The school of architecture in Northern Ontario downtown Sudbury is a unique site, one that lends itself to Green design solution. My design takes an integrated approach towards an appropriate Green architecture impacting the environment; intertwine with the existing fabric and the diversity of English and French cultures. Where aesthetics and function carry equal weight by considering all building materials and Green components to be potential sculptural elements. From building forms creating layers for utilizing south exposure for solar and a place to get away and appreciate several different views of downtown, while having a sense of openness and freedom from grade congestion. I feel that ''Architecture tends to be viewed by non-architects as a single sculptural entity instead of a whole concept with purpose, interacting with the people who inhabit it and the connection with its surrounding context.'' My goal for a successful design composition is to respond to the inhabitant's functional needs, stimulate their senses and enrich their mental well-being. By focusing on three main goals: Green Design, Performance, and Sustainability within Sudbury's urban fabric. Providing a better quality of life, cultural diversity, and interaction between all genders to benefit from and be precedents for future generations.
The School of Architecture, an architectural urban sculpture within a community, is the embodiment of both celebrating materiality and harmonizing with the natural environment- an educational community were mindfully sited northwest in downtown Sudbury so as not to disturb the existing city's fabric. Benefiting from the city's amenities: multi bus routes, near transit station, main municipal road runs through my two sites, and the railroad/station. Designed with sustainable materials/concepts drawing from nature's resources and improving reduction in energy consumption. Using several different types of Green design strategies and considerations to: the buildings envelop, daylighting factors, solar heat gains, energy production, and water/waste for internal and external usage. Defining the site's circulation with the buildings structure and courtyard design help navigate visitors through, developing a coherent urban space, maximizing light exposure, and multiple views to the downtown urban fabric.
My design composition has a vision of creating straightforward, pleasant and appropriated architecture that at once makes a modern statement. Creating an urban sculpture blending into the cityscape. The layering and location of the building along a strong axis lines shapes defines the urban context of the site, opening up views and connecting with the surrounding urban fabric. Garden and rooftop spaces were generate from the building's voids and an open courtyard was established linking the structures developing a community within a downtown community. Welcome the city's interests and inviting their curiosity. Upon approaching the site, visitors are treated to a preview of well-balanced educational spaces, yet as the building layouts unfold, each design structure may be recognized and appreciated individually. Achieving such desirable effects by developing a hierarchy of elements, buildings forms, thoughtfully layering of architectural details. While maintaining the circulation and openness throughout the site, so as not to interrupt the views, allowing amp light penetration and spaces within the structure were formed with architectural components.
My design intentions for the School of Architecture is to bring forth the opportunity at hand, to absorb the distinct characteristics of student's lifestyles and then devise solution just as unique. Striving to give specificity to the design, by a couple key elements within the design: quality of natural light, appropriate use of materials, pleasing sense of proportions and a sense of balance between spaces. Allowing for future growth opportunities and precedent for conceptual green design within a eduxcational community.
