Welcome to Fleetwood
The massive exposure that is on the horizon for Surrey must only be taken lightly. This is not a marker - it's an opportunity to look at a local, micro problem from a global perspective. The design intent is three-fold : Identity, Geography, and Community. This proposal seeks to create a place that is a city icon, a viewing platform and a local destination.
The corner of Fraser and 88th is geographically the most central location out of the six centers and it is at a higher altitude where the visitors can be elevated above the trees and buildings for views to the entire city and the surrounding landscape. Five boxes each taking on a regional characteristic, are oriented towards their corresponding towns. The sixth, located at the southern site, is low lying and shares a more intimate connection to its town center, Fleetwood. The boxes consist of a metal and glass cladding that work together to create the framed views.
Explorations showed that the 5m x 5m footprint provided an optimum proportion that could be occupied, while still maintaining the appearance of a sculpture rather than that of a building.
The location yields an opportunity to create a place that is activated by the community - the increase of pedestrian flow allows for the harvesting of energy through the use of piezo pavers. This interaction between the community and the site is paramount and must not be passed up if a transformation from suburban to urban is going to take place.
