Description

Journey in the Faubourgs

Embedded between two well-defined urban entities, the area around the Champ-de-Mars metro station shows a succession of ruptures and reweavings between the historic court and the city. First describing a barrier both natural and built (stream and fortification), the sector later becomes a suburb and even a middle-class neighborhood, to become a break again with the construction of the highway. Today, the area around the station remains a frontier, belonging to a set of singular blocks strongly marked by the passage of the highway.

The redefinition of the station's surroundings is part of this urban scar. In accordance with the objective of reweaving and translating all of the interventions initiated to the east and west (QIM, Faubourg Québec), the present approach allows for the continuation of the north-south streets of the city. Echoing the development of the old fortifications of the Champ-de-Mars, the proposal recalls the current urban rupture. The fissure is a positive and contemporary interpretation of the historical and current limit between the old town and the metropolis. The singular urban path that it defines presents an alternation of built and open spaces allowing a succession of atmospheres and experiences.
