Description

A mediating architecture

The family and friendly atmosphere of the neighborhood invites us to consider each facet of the project in situ in relation to neighboring buildings and possible interactions in order to preserve the assets of the site. Thus, to create respectful interfaces in harmony with the environment, the cultural center will implement a multiplicity of scales and proximity relationships. The creation of visual percepts will allow to link the whole of the public and private infrastructures while unifying the built framework.

It will be a mediating architecture, bringing users closer to cultural resources and accompanying them in their moments of pleasure, discovery, sharing and fulfillment. Our parameters were the following:
-To create a remarkable and warm place to live that is conducive to the acquisition of knowledge, social relations and entertainment;
To guide the user within a human-scale architecture in order to encourage an instinctive, sensitive and direct appropriation of the space;
-Establish a dialogue between the new architectural spaces and the neighborhood of the center as actors of the community life of the borough;
-Offer flexibility and balance in the design to adapt to the present and future variety of activities and audiences.

Children's gardens, green wall, green roofs, landscaped courtyard, marsh, pond, reeds and the preservation of the Benny Library's perennials... this is the promise of a serene landscape. A building of natural elegance whose scale is attentive to its neighborhood: it finds its strength by uniting with the physical and historical context of the place.

A lobby welcomes visitors, and serves the library and multi-purpose room spaces. This reception area also opens onto a multi-purpose room that fully participates in the dialogue of spaces. This room can be adapted to different activities thanks to its pivoting walls and opens onto the landscaped courtyard - the green and peaceful heart of the center. Around it are shared spaces that encourage social interaction, notably the library-café, the animation room and the periodicals section. The original architecture of the ceiling of the ambulatory offers an open perspective that guides users to the key points of the building.

Our materials are those of Benny Farm. For the building envelope, we chose a warm and robust brick: it will be a beautiful masonry inspired by the houses on Benny Avenue. The interior space will benefit from the richness and intimacy of wood, which will also provide good acoustics.

While revealing its institutional nature, our project will be integrated into the residential environment of Benny Farm through its pedestrian walkways and by favouring public and alternative transportation in order to minimize the ecological footprint.

All dimensions of culture will coexist and participate in the conservation, testimony and dissemination of a heritage as vast and diverse as the communities of users who will frequent the cultural center.
