Mosaic: Place de l'Acadie

The Place de l'Acadie neighbourhood is undergoing a positive and radical change, renewing its living environment. In this spirit, the neighbourhood park is an opportunity to pay attention to the sense of belonging that is being rebuilt on new structures that will welcome both old and new residents.

The park becomes a large-scale entrance square to a group of buildings, to a neighborhood. The composition of the landscaping is inspired by the distinctive motif of the floor of the entrance halls of the old buildings.

The composition of the whole park is cut by the pattern of the paving inspired by the pattern of the floors of the entrance halls. The commemoration is thus both subtle and pervasive. In detail, the numbers of the former addresses are metallic insertions on the paved surface, each one located in front of a micro-garden, a perforation allowing a certain permeability to the concrete.

The mound planted with trees acts as a filter for the highway's nuisance and imports into the city a forest feeling generated by various species native to the regional forest landscape. It protects the center of the park for playgrounds and public plaza.

Integrated into the composition, the playground is framed by and inserted into the mound, where a slide and a stone amphitheater take advantage of the slope. Play modules are installed, metal spheres and climbing rocks, chosen for their interest and their integration into the landscape. The safe surface of the ground is grass reinforced by a rubber mesh 'Firesmart' offering a green and refreshing surface on the whole playground.

The circulation paths invite the use of the park as a destination and as a place of passage. They offer a variety of skating ring configurations. A generous perimeter circulation allows for flexibility of routes and a threshold to the park. Cast-in-place concrete binds the surfaces together with a pattern of joints and mosaic finishes. The paving materializes the reference to the 'crazy works' of the old lobbies, transposed to the scale of the site.

At the heart of the space, a widening of the circulations becomes a true civic place. A series of three long and wide stone benches (±1m x 12m) and linear misting jets (4) follow the movement of people and structure the space. Visually, the public plaza includes the adjacent grassy beaches and allows for a large space free of visual obstacles, allowing for performances and events.

The lawns offer a flexible use for play and relaxation, and are bordered by trees to provide a central area. The beaches incorporate fruit trees adapted to urban conditions, allowing for community harvesting opportunities.

Planted with native species adapted to wetlands, the perimeter fringe of retention ditches helps define the interior space of the park. A series of planted pits contribute to the permeability of the entire park, perforating the paved surfaces which become a concrete "sieve".

The lighting is chosen to highlight certain details of interest. Among other things, lighting accompanies the fog jets embedded in the ground. The underside of the grassy beaches is also highlighted by lighting elements inserted into the paved border. To ensure safe and adequate lighting in all seasons, a series of light poles are located at the periphery and at strategic locations.

The ecological aspect is developed as an integral part of the landscape experience, putting natural elements at the heart of the landscape concept. A series of technical components are combined to create a composition that performs by borrowing from ecological mechanisms and magnifying them for the benefit of the landscape composition. Thus, bioretention, biodiversity and heat reduction operate through an approach called "hyper-nature" by borrowing from the natural palette, intensifying its expression, not only for its contemplative potential but for its ecological performance and its playful and participatory interest.

The strategy of the island as a sound barrier, pollution filter, and wind breaker could ideally extend to the land bordering the highway to filter nuisances at the source and expand the pleasant space. The central island of the park would then be part of a herd giving a landscape identity to the whole neighborhood.
