The place
The main challenge was to create a clear counterpoint to inward oriented architecture in the context of dense urban tissue. Therefore, instead of placing the required function underneath the courtyard, which seemed simple and efficient at first thought, the extension by the eastern corner of the building appeared to be the best solution,for its spatial potential and possibility to create a new main entrance by the Port Dauphin St.
The volume
The building is divided into two main volumes: the ground floor, which encloses a little courtyard between Archbishop Palace and the School of Architecture, and the first floor, which emerges from the roofs of existing outhouses and points east to the harbor. The horizontal arrangement of the volumes and the rotation of the amphitheater's axis allow the best access to daylight and open view for the existing buildings, white the mild slopes of green roofs create a unique walking path and an additional space for leisure and gathering.
The use
The multi-use space in the ground floor serves as the exhibition and critical area as well as a foyer for the amphitheater above. Direct entrances from the street give the opportunity to interest passers-by with the works presented inside. The separate main entrance for students and teachers leads straight to the current building of the School. Sanitary and technical facilities are located in the basement.
The added value
Architecture is a vital testimony of its time and the social practice of its dwellers. To preserve the continuity of urban process means to let it evolve according to contemporary needs. Laval School of Architecture definitely requires new spaces for gathering, but it also needs open views and green areas for leisure. And of course – an emblematic addition.
