Game Plan
The role of the architect is not unlike that of a baseball manager. Provide for a winning combination of zest and intelligence in your line-up and structure your game plan for the full nine innings. Here's the architect's game plan. Organize the building into 3 components: the program and manner in which these pieces relate to each other address the main criteria outlined in the competition brief: community friendliness, broad thinking sustainability and a viable phasing and funding strategy.
Community Friendly
The idea is to get the initial piece built, which best evokes and encapsulates the communities desires. The program's main constituent is the very public McAuley Dunn Hall. Situated to address a newly expanded 31st avenue entry to the sports park, the hall is intended to become the community "living room". A multi-purpose space which, can host a multitude of events from fitness classes, to press gathering and even more formal affairs, This initial phase would also address the public art requirements. A small, dedicated gallery, adjacent and accessible to the public hall, would house kinetic sculptures that could be experienced from within and outside the building. This design proposal suggests the public art could also "interface" directly with the building. An exterior sculpture " the culprit" situated within the north court has been left abandoned in the grass, is this, the evidential culprit responsible for the shattered living room glass? Too simplistic, too much of a groaner? Think about who'll be the primary user of the facility, Little Leaguers! Now that's "light-hearted" community friendly thinking.
Hosting a major event, let that space leave an impression. The McAuley & Dunn Hall allows itself the luxury of becoming that "glassed-in folly" in the park. Wrapped in a trestle of timberwork, this kinetic space honours two of Edmonton's finest women athletes. Mildred McAuley and Betty Dunn, these inductees of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame, have inspired generations of women in sport, not to mention the movie "A League of Their Own". This hall reaches through and beyond the community, into the city's historical fabric.
The building itself should be a dynamic addition to the community. Beyond the glassed in cube of the main hall, a patchwork of porcelain panels make up the bulk of the exterior cladding. The colours reflect the clay coloured dirt in-fields found on the surrounding baseball diamonds and should sit just as comfortably in their grassed surroundings.
