BLUZ
In this exercise of ideas, I focused my attention on elements that are rather generic and easily usable in a wide range of rentals to facilitate our winter experience.
If we analyze the motivations that drive us to go out in winter, we notice that two main reasons lead us: our lifestyle or fun (hobby or curiosity).
1) People who go out because of their lifestyles are motivated by exercise, sports and health. To facilitate the winter experience I suggested chairs for sunbathing, the wind screen for ping pong or other exercises, the Bixi - modified to become a stationary bicycle, the swing for adults (yes, we all love it!).
2) People who go out in search of hobbies, are led by a curiosity that can be both fun :
Visually - served by color, lights, inspiring and appealing winter design
Acoustically - music in concerts or as an accompaniment to a walk
Intellectually - cultural panels with exhibits on topics relevant to the region, winter sculptures, advanced cultural facilities
Socially - facilitated by a winter pavilion (non-commercial)
Bixi - in winter (urban symbol of shared resources and healthy living)
Each fall and spring, Bixi puts considerable effort into storing its bicycles and their facilities. Conveniently located at the edge of parks, Bixi stations can be transformed into true winter outdoor exercise oases. The mechanism for converting a street bike into a stationary one is simple and affordable, and with an open, park-like, transparent shelter, Bixi's will continue to serve their members' lifestyles throughout the winter as well.
Bluz - the sunbathing chair
True to its purpose of keeping the wind out and the sun in, the chair features a wooden frame covered by a polycarbonate sheet (250 times more durable than glass, polycarbonate allows 99.9% of light to pass through and retains 100% of ultraviolet rays). With its decorative pierced metal sheet casing, it is easily adaptable to the targeted environment, with ethnic, modern, classic and even multicolored designs. The Bluz should be ubiquitous in all parks as well as near office buildings where people can enjoy it during their breaks.
The following boards highlight other simple and effective solutions to improve our winter passage.
The targeted project is part of a rather particular neighborhood of Montreal. With a predominant immigrant population of 78%, Parc Extension vibrates with a multicultural life. Mostly from India and the Middle East, the population faces a great challenge of integration with the Montreal winters. With the goal of finding alternatives to alleviate winter stress and encourage the population to embrace the winter nature of the country, I tried an ethnic approach. The soul of an immigrant remains deeply rooted in the culture of origin and there is nothing more appealing than a touch that reminds them of their origins.
With this approach, the development plan of the Parc de la Gare Jean-Talon employs ethnic elements from India and Arabia. Among other things, the Souk (Arab market), specifically oriental, is the central point of interest, which, with proper management, could become a winter attraction for the population of all Montreal

Winter debate: sitting or standing?
In the modern context of a livable and pleasant winter, the topic of resting spaces needs to be revisited. Are "standing" resting solutions more appropriate in the winter context than classic sitting solutions? Should we put more effort into reinventing our benches?
The Winter Bixi - Year-round use of the Bixi
The proposal explores the possibility of using the Bixi and its network in winter.
A simple, affordable and widely available mechanism allows a road bike to be modified into a stationary bike, ready for a workout.
By installing a transparent shelter, open on the side (park side and facing away from the west wind), Bixi's can be easily transformed into exercise bicycles during the winter.
2012 Statistics - Montreal
50,000 members (10% increase)
2.7 million trips (57% increase)
5120 bikes
411 stations
The Paravent
The Paravent (para-wind), despite its simplicity, is the star of winter life.
Simple construction and removable in extra season, light for the eye.
Offers seasonal shelter for a ping-pong table, a children's playground, a windbreak in a bus station, a pedestrian shelter on the windy side of a commercial street and many others.
Construction: Clear polycarbonate sheet, removable
Base: excavated and permanent in concrete, covered during the summer with caps
The Winter Pavilion
Rather classic as a concept, the winter pavilion is highly neglected nowadays. Useful throughout the year, it can provide temporary shelter from the cold in winter and from the heat in summer. Fully glazed, walls and roof, it offers another solution for sun and light bathing. A geothermal heating system will help maintain a constant temperature throughout the year.
The Winter Pavilion, with its microclimate, can accommodate the use of trees and green walls inside, enhancing the winter experience and inviting socialization.
The Winter Pavilion should be present in all major parks or university campuses.
Jean-Talon Station Park
Park Extension
Population: approximately 30,000
Population that speaks a language other than French or English at home: 78
Visible minority: 61
Asian and Middle Eastern origin: 48.9
The park of the Jean-Talon station, too generic in design and dominated in proportion by the building of the station needs to be customized to integrate harmoniously into this multicultural and lively neighborhood.
An ode to the multiculturalism of this neighborhood, the project uses aesthetic elements that recall the cultural roots of the predominant population. Both ethnic and modern, the plan seeks to create an inviting space for all, providing a platform for socialization and rest.
The Winter Pavilion at the station is intended to be a resting place sheltered from the elements. Through its simplicity, it invites meditation, reading and socialization. A green wall covers the north wall and entertains the mind during the long winter months. Covered entirely in polycarbonate sheeting, the Pavilion shelters and facilitates winter contemplation when the weather does not permit direct participation. Supported by geothermal heating, the temperature remains constant year round.
