DESIGN RATIONALE
The building is designed on biophilic design principals, utilizing natural materials including wood, stone masonry and glass. It will therefore be compatible with the park setting of the River Valley. These materials together with the inclusion of concrete block masonry for interior partitions will provide a durable, maintainable structure.
A sculpture is meaningfully placed under the substantial roof overhang at the west end of the building as the public art contribution.
Sustainable features include the passive solar gain that will be experienced in the south facing glazing. Shading studies indicate that during summer conditions, the south facing glazing is shaded by the substantial roof overhang and sun shades.
Both main building entrances are sheltered by the building configuration from the north winds.
The curved plan of the building conforms to the shape of the skating adjacent to the assigned site, allowing easy access from the existing site pathways at each end of the building. It also focuses the interior gathering area on the open park area southeast of the building, which in the winter is used as a skating rink. The kitchen/concession is located to focus on this interior space. Washrooms have been designed without doors, to facilitate use by patrons wearing skates.

- Openness of interior spaces encourages secure environment.
- Glazed central gathering space is a focal point of the site, both summer and winter, encouraging healthy interactive activity .
