TOTEM
Concept description
The "Totem" project is composed with a shipping container 20 feet, a set of 26 m? of solar panels and a cozy and comfortable interior. The chosen location is conditioned by sunlight. Indeed, the site proposed by the competition is fairly wooded. This limits both the shape and location of the project. We have therefore chosen to position the project in this location, relatively close to the library. It enjoys a sunny and clutter from the lawn between it and the enter path. The "Totem" is composed of a roof and a front photovoltaic panels. This form can capture the most possible sunlight, some of the season. Indeed, the front panels have the advantage of not being covered with snow.
The technical part of the panels (battery and inverter) are placed in a dedicated area at the top of the container. This will secure these facilities. The interior consists of a space on the garden level with an information screen, tablet and high seats. Students can come to connect their smartphones or computers to their tablet. They can both stand or sit on the wall tablet. A non-slip PVC sol and a series of coat hanger allows to wait for recharging their devices in com-fort.
Access upstairs is via a staircase in aluminum. It consists of an open space on lounge a large win¬dow on the football stadium and an area with stool and shelf. Students can settle over extended periods. A radiant heating system movie in the walls allows to have a comfortable temperature.
A translucent wall gives a natural, diffused light on the west side. While the night lighting is provided by LED. All product and 8000 Watt can charge 500 to 600 100 to 200 smartphones and laptop computers every day of the year.
Community consultation
Regarding this project, I consulted not a student or residents, but an old student and friend of the University of Sherbrooke. He advised both on uses, but also on climatic elements that had not been considered originally. The fact of adding a wireless router to create a hot spot in the garden as well as a non-slip floor and coats doors at garden level in particular. He also advised me on the uses and features that could make this type of project in a Canadian university where he studied. I wish more information and review for this project during its design. But being outside Montreal, so I asked the only person I knew who could find out. She brought me still a great help in asking the right questions and pointing to the problems that I had not planned to design the "Totem". For this I thank her participation and I hope his advice will allow me to make the best project for Concordia University.
