NAGOO EXPÉDITION
(It faces south) (Shipping)
This project named Nagoo Expédition is located in Montreal,Quebec at Concordia University's Loyola campus. Situated between Sherbrooke St. West andConcordia University's Loyola campus. Situated between Sherbrooke St. West and the Concordia Library, this new Net Zero structure is intended to engage with the surrounding nature to create a new organic space that interweaves and harmonizes reclaimed fabrication with the beautiful bounties of nature.
The design of this new Bus Stop shelter utilizes sustainable and passive building principles to deliver a healthy building with as little impact as possible to the environment. The heart of the shelter is composed of recycled shipping containers and is oriented true south with large windows to maximize solar heat gain during it's peak winter seasons. Included in this design is a Solar Air Heater to provide additional warmth to travellers. During summer months, the existing oak and maple trees provide an abundance of shade to keep the structure cool. During the night, travellers will be welcomed by LED lights powered by solar electricity making with shelter autonomous to the grid and provide a sense of safety. On the exterior, a green roof with drought resistant ornamental Switchgrass will help control storm water and help diminish the urban heat island while maintaining aesthetic qualities throughout the year. Furthermore, the walkway and interior flooring are composed of Soil Cement which adds a rustic dirt path ambiance while diminishing cementitious materials by more than half.
As Travellers move through this shelter, they are encompassed by the balance of city and wilderness in a cohesive form. Surrounded by reclaimed, upcycled and green products, travellers are embraced by the health, comfort and feelgood that sustainable Architecture provides.
Community Consultation
The input from three anonymous students and a former frequent traveller of that bus terminal played a large role in the development of the project. These four people were tired of the generic bus terminal which provided only a place to sit. They had issues with the existing structure as being bland, cold and unsightly. They wished they had something better, something comfortable and most notably, something warm. With that, the idea of a passive shelter was pitched and it was favourably excepted. These four wanted something that would reflect Concordia better than a faded turquoise structure, something visually appealing. They wanted to be out of the wind and snow when it was cold and somewhere cool when the sun was hot. They wanted a place to sit or stand that wasn't "grey". Lastly they shared concerns that a new structure would lay waste to the existing trees. With this information, the project was able to evolve in a positive direction.
