OSCILLATING FOREST
PUBLIC CONSULTATION IN NOTRE-DAME DE GRACE
A public consultation of the passersby of the Notre-Dame de Grace area lead to a far greater understanding of the urban caracter of the site. A sense of community engagement was lacking, hence we chose to design a bus shelter that would be an asset to the community and a stimulus for exchange, visually and intellectually. A large part of the population is composed of University Concordia students, the athletes at the Loyola stadium, Loyola high school students and the pedestrians of the neighbourhood. All individuals interact with this site according to their specific schedule and all have somewhere to get to. The bus shelter was viewed as nothing more than a point of transition on their journey to a given destination. The site is energized by the different schedules of the community, by understanding the cyclical shifting of various flows of movement, the shelter emerged as a point of convergence. These fleeting bits of energy of the moving individuals were an inspiration for the proposed bus shelter which would use the intrinsic energy of the site to illuminate the surroundings. Its presence transforms the cityscape by day with activity and by night with light making the corner more enjoyable and attractive.
THE CONCEPT
Nowadays, the individual is aware of every minute passing by. Daily life is fixed to a precise timeline yet the sun drifts nearly imperceptibly in the sky. It was our mission to consciously slow down time for the students waiting for the bus by translating the course of the sun into a delicate progression of colored light. Composed of a sequence of undulating surfaces, the shelter responds to the inclination of the oncoming sun rays. The surfaces are light-sensitive panels absorbing the sun's energy and are simultaneous lit up by an internal network of fiber optic cables. This becomes a visualization of the energy of the sun into a light-clock and it build upon the structure of the existing bus shelter. The shelter interacts with the public while concurrently informing them with explanatory panels of its intent. It is designed for the comfort and the enjoyment of the students of the bus shelter and encourages all other passersby to take part. The undulating slats are angled to capture the sun's rays at specific times throughout the day and the seasons, visually informing passersby of the varying energy supplied by the sun at different periods. The undulating slats exist as fixed panels on the perimeter of the shelter and as swinging central structures. The participants are invited to sway within the bus shelter and catch the sun's rays with the superior panel.
