Description of concept
Our form was born based on three needs: first, the necessary inclination to avoid accumulation of snow on the roof surface. To solve this problem, a chalet based format was proposed. Subsequently, using the shape of the roof, we added solar panels taking advantage of solar radiation on that area. Finally, the third need was to give historical identity to the project. We researched on the elongated form of the Canadian Indian tribes, the longhouses, characterizing the project as a comfortable shelter for the primary activities of a person. The bus shelter was designed with independent modules that can be assembled in different places, being expanded if necessary and possible. Each module is 3,0 m x 6,0 m, made in steel structure, allowing assembly in a completely dry construction. Considering the height, our bus shelter has a total five meters. As mentioned before, we installed solar panels on the roof to produce energy for the building pursuing sustainability. Energy produced is about 280 W/day, that serves for lighting. There is also the production of energy generated by the user from gym treadmills installed inside the shelter. These can produce 100W, transforming muscle power by the user into energy to keep the bus shelter working. The outdoor finishing is made of polycarbonate plastic solid sheet in gray color. The internal materiality is made mainly of wood, an ecological and natural material which transmits warmth and comfort to the users. Finally, we added external modules in a staircase format for the users to sit down and enjoy the shelter in the outdoor area on comfortable sunny days.
Description of community consultation
We chose to conduct an online interview with some of the users of the current bus shelter at Concordia University giving a better understanding of the use of this area. In majority, people use the bus shelter in cold seasons, mostly 3 to 4 times a week. Nobody considered to like the existent bus shelter and almost 70% of users interviewed define it as regular and poor, showing the need for a new project. From the answers obtained, referring to what they like and do not like of the bus shelter, we had the opportunity, better to think about the project and its program. Among the answers, we realized the need for a thermally isolated environment (without large temperature fluctuations) with comfortable, fun and enjoyable socialization areas, providing an adequate space and cover for the people who use it.
