WOODEN CAVE
CONCEPT
Due to the global climate changes and environmental imbalance it has become necessary to implement sustainable initiatives in the routine of big cities. Therefore, the proposal is intended to integrate the primitive idea of shelter with the use of renewable energy. The project consists of a wooden bus stop - which refers to a shelter archetype - with solar heating. The material's choice was given due to wood's high thermal resistance, its renewable properties, its existence in great amount in Canada, and to conform cozy spaces. The heating system results from the integration of a solar water heating panels and photovoltaic panels. Simplifying, the water passes through solar heating panels and is pumped by a pump that works with energy generated by photovoltaic panels. The heated water is stored in a tank located beneath the seats and thereby heating the space. For the construction is expected to reuse the materials of the current bus shelter. The glasses will be used as part of the vertical closure and the metallic structure as a support to avoid the thermal loss by contact between the shelther and the ground. On the outside, next to the bus stop, it's planned a deck to house educative activities related to sustainability. By applying simple concepts of heating and renewable energy system, the bus stop shows that small ideas can help to build and propagate sustainable thoughts. Thus, the bus stop becomes a landmark of the sustainable posture that Concordia University wants to encourage.
COMMUNITY CONSULTATION
In order to know the community's opinion, a survey was conducted by opening an online form which was answered by students of Loyola's campus. Most negative responses about the existing bus stop were related to insufficient heating and uncomfortable seats. Thus, it was realized the need to create a bus stop that would provide more comfort to users of Loyola's Campus transportation.
