Courtyard house: A Bold Idea Starts From Small Dwelling
Courtyard House is a multi-unit housing proposal providing a quality living environment at densities higher than conventional detached housing. This idea re-defines a new lot pattern suitable for existing laneway systems in Vancouver. With the concept of "minimum dwelling" (a notion of flexibility and changeability of use), this proposal re-invents a new courtyard housing typology seeking to maximize the utilities and minimize the boundaries between indoor and outdoor, private and public spaces in dwelling. The design utilizes courtyards to provide transitional spaces, direct outdoor connections and private outdoor spaces, independent structures eventually is mirrored into a duplex or quadplex development. Each house addresses the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces in a way that contributes to a typical family life with a privacy needs, at the same time promotes engagement with the street and neighbours. The layout is easily modified when the need arises, reducing remodelling costs, increasing marketability and leaving room for re-zoning potentials. The goal is to provide a dynamic and flexible dwelling that is affordable and able to fulfill a multitude of purpose and function for all abilities. It is imperative for an affordable and healthily sustainable communities.
