Snake & Ladders School
The project aims to build pavilions, under the theme of community, bringing together an elementary school for 344 students, affordable social housing, a culinary market as well as a community center, library and sports center shared between the different uses, in order to respond to a critical lack of these services to the local community of Griffintown.
The composition of this complex, designed around the two existing buildings, creates a third space, used as a multi-use transition zone by the school and the neighborhood. The insertion of a walkway ramp, starting at the heart of this space, unites the different programs of the site. The concept of the esplanade is not only an architectural statement, but also a composition bringing together all the interior and exterior spaces, built and inhabited. This social platform brings together many aspects: from school to housing, from community spaces to commercial spaces, from interior courtyard to exterior courtyards.
The spaces designed as in-between are innovative for students, parents, residents and inhabitants. They allow for interaction between different users, as well as building a warm urban refuge. At the same time, the school aims to break away from the generic school model and offers unique learning environments. An interior courtyard is placed at the heart of the educational facility allowing nature to blend in and illuminate the space.
