The goal of this project is to synthesize the goals and vision of Lab-École into an architectural object. We seek to create a provocative language that houses a compilation of innovative spaces conducive to experimental school programming. By combining various strategies of layout, massing, sustainable development concepts, integration with the site and dynamic aesthetic treatment, we will succeed in erecting a focal point for the city of Chicoutimi.
The programming requires a duality of typologies of spaces whose scale varies. On the one hand, we have defined spaces such as classrooms and the gymnasium, and on the other, fluid spaces such as gathering spaces, the creative lab and others. We used the ambiguity of this duality as the basis for our volumetric and spatial design. Essentially, the architectural design is an interconnected pavilion building on two levels. The premises are on the periphery while the open spaces, which are double height, are in the center and contain interior courtyards that act as habitable skylights. This strategy offers us spatial flexibility in height and plan through its composition of interconnected volumes.
