The Urban Design Conceptual Plan for the city of Sudbury has taken into new city planning methods and developing a new smart city. Ideas and research that be used in this planning project have been successful in major cities around the world. Planning strategies that will benefit the growth of Sudbury's future success. The main focal point for the design planning stem from a case study conducted by Peter Calthrope in a TED talks taking place in 2017. Utilizing the seven design principles of bundling better cities to develop the new Sudbury that can be crucial to the efforts of regreening and local community development. The first Principle is Preserve, this includes preserving the natural landscape and ecosystem of the Sudbury area. Establishing a new identity for Sudbury that create a coexisting community with natural. Utilizing effect vegetation and trees to help with the regreening process. New Green Spaces can be placed through the core of the city. This can allow a greener city, community growth and natural ecologies. The second Principle is Mix, Creating a mixed-use neighbor with affordable housing and commercial infrastructure. The buildings used can prevent a "Sprawl City Development" by using the lower levels as commercial business. The higher levels can used as residential units. Also taking advantage of roof top development for maximum usage of the area. Green roofs, solar energy, and residential space. The third Principle is Walk, this method is a crucial method to consider. Limiting vehicle usage can help with decreasing the carbon released into the City air. Having a Super Block city concept can allow for people to walk to local business and recreation. The fourth Principle is Bike, prioritizing bicycle networks and auto free zones. With the Paris Notre Dame Bikeway under way, this can fit into the new development of the hear of Sudbury. Creating destination for bicyclist to ride to. The fifth Principle is Connect; this focuses of limiting block size for car use. Allowing pedestrians to use the roads freely with the use of automobiles. A case study for this is the Super Block, mentioned before. The city of Barcelona has used this method and it has been very successful. Limiting smaller roads for new green space and street access for dining. Redirecting cars to stay main roads, this can also increase public transportation and non-car travel. The sixth principle is Ride, developing a high-quality public and affordable transportation. The seventh principle is Focus, planning effective road usage and limiting big highway planning that flow through the city.
The planning for green space through out the Downtown Sudbury area can also contribute to culturally growth of the City. Creating an easy accessible space for local events can allow participation of different people. The space designed allows for small to large events in the area, small culturally events can be seen by different people shopping or walking the dog. Having the residential units close to the downtown commercial properties can also contribute to the growth of small business in the city. This can allow for more unique stores to open, that might not have the same exposure in spread out area. Bringing rich culture to the Downtown area is key to growth. The issue of parking has also been a problem in new city development. Creating parking lots is sometimes considered an undesirable eye sore with can bring down the beauty of the city. Developing parking garages under all the new infrastructure can provide effective parking cutler and allowing space for other beneficial planning such as parks, art and regreening. The Memorial park has been placed in a great location, with new planning the growth and beauty of the park can continue around the city. Also connecting to the new Thomas Davis Square project to new local green space. Effective planning for residential units closes to commercial and government can contribute to successful recruiting to business. Large cities have many resources to draw new talent to their work force, with proper planning Sudbury can bring in those people. Bringing in many people from around North American and the world can bring new ideas to The Sudbury Market. Financial Incentives will come, Sudbury can begin competing with Toronto.
