Sudbury has enormous potential to achieve its best future potential as one of the most livable, sustainable and innovative cities in North America.
The vision to transform the city and its region to 2050 needs to be a concerted effort, involving all parties of the community, and needs to be a plan which brings transformative decisions and actions on 3 main levels to be most successful.
Our proposed vision today illustrates one potential outcome, but we mainly propose an approach, a way of thinking forward, which creates a stronger destination, instrumentalize it in tactical actions plans on various sectors of development and finally a materialization in actual projects built in the city.
Creating the Future Sudbury Destination !
LEVEL 1 - PLACE CREATION IN THE CITY CORE
This is the outcome! The visible outcome and manifestation of the vision and its plans. The public projects such as our proposed canal and lagoon, the new lakeside improvements, the new multi‐purpose arena & cultural center, the new innovative library, the Art Gallery are catalysts. These are to stimulate private sector and community involvement in infills in the town center, in greening sites, in repurposing unused facilities and in taking initiatives to promote and make new events and happening come to Sudbury. It's a long term, gradual project but early critical mass must be achieved to make it work.
LEVEL 2 - DEPLOYING THE VISION INTO STRONG URBAN FUNTIONS & ACTIVITIES
Many visions stay as marketing brochures and themes - in order to become reality, they need to be developed into real tactical initiatives in various sectors and areas which will together make the city make its vision a reality!
It starts with transforming the town center into a vibrant center of the city and of the community. More functions, more housing, better walkable streets, active transport solutions, initiative to stimulate innovative industries, cultural industries, the community sector which employs many, the digital virage to implement neighborhood services level and the circular economy. It needs real budgets allocated, real sites such as the rail yards or the zone near it, some infill in downtown and some changes to zoning and planning rules to make it happen. It must be done in dialogue and involvement by the population.
LEVEL 3 - CREATING THE FUTURE SUDBURY DESTINATION
This level is about the regional strategy and vision - it is political and sets the course for what Sudbury of 2050 wants to be ! The most liveable, the most sustainable, the most open city in Northern Canada. It addresses how to leverage its assets, pasts, talents to develop, attract and foster new industries, create new attractions which will define Sudbury and chart a vision which we can be proud to tell about globally. It's really more than branding and place making ! Its about the future essence of Sudbury!
