People, Place and Time: Understanding Sudbury
Tracing the mark of human settlement from ancient period, the Greater Sudbury in Ontario province of Canada has gained its momentum in being an excellent livable place in today's time for its multiple dynamics; the mining quarries, construction of Canadian Pacific Railway, colonization that resulted into a multicultural community all have added and nevertheless to mention the enormous greenery with hundreds of lakes in and around the region. Taking all these under considerations within certain taglines of geo-climatic, socio-economic and cultural potentials, the area offers a splendid opportunity in culminating a very uniquely environment responsive approach for the people and its places of Sudbury.
Conceptual ramification
This region with course of time having its geographical richness and plentitude in resources has shaped the life and destiny of the people today here. To give back the nature a thankful nod for its abundance and blessings towards the people of Sudbury, the project is a stroke of gratitude by bringing back air, water and earth to its utmost purest form within the urban core. With such bold yet sensitive initiatives, it is perceived that the futuristic urban core will be in tune with a 'closer to nature' ambiance. The vision of city towards future is actually towards more nature reminiscing the past as an inspiration. Eventually the built environment will be more breathable as the induced water body will be a lively place; not only engaging people of the city but also threading a finer natural ecosystem that will be carried with its vast greenery proposed within it. Rethinking the Rail Land. The belief of coherence and possibility of mutual growth both for manmade built environment and Mother Nature is annotated here. Repurposing the rail land of historic Canadian Pacific Rail lines brings back the ultimate potentials for an effective planning strategy and starting for this design propositions.
Conceptually, channeling a water landscape in the historic segment is an abstraction of containing man-made glory diminishing in nature; the same way nature and its resources here had once paved the path for the people of this region. It's a circle of celebration between man and nature that rooted here from centuries ago and a pride taken by its people still today.
Functionally, this profound initiative administers some other major aspects that are crucial for the city; considering the rail track replaced, this huge land procreates a meaningful scope. Now the connecting canal with the nearby lake is not only a mere decision of landscaping; rather it encompasses other grave issues and challenges for the project:
To integrate with city's further mission of continuing to approach climate change challenge and going beyond zero net energy-the concept of 'giving back than it consumes' is a key to opt for this major initiative. This water channel and green will be a positive contributing factor in achieving these issues.
Timber production scope, one of the city's visions of economic sustainability is aligned with this design intervention; apart from promising a prospective green segment, its micro climate will be an accumulating factor for balancing temperature of overall urban core adjacent to it.
The water channel will also act as 'water traffic Route' to reach down town from other residential parts; an alternate to reduce pressure on motorized vehicle within the city and to promote the mission of lessening the carbon emission.
This specific intervention of land use in many ways will retain the vibrancies of present day multicultural community activities and recreate the opportunity to share indigenous knowledge in multiple ways. This soften belt of nature will tie up and unite the urban core in a harmonious manner making it a life line for greater Sudbury.
Re-Purposing Road Network in Down Town Commercial zone
The urban design intervention of envisioning this bold natural entity is also to regulate and inspire the upcoming development of adjacent areas; it's a norm that as evident the nature within us more closely we can feel its blessing; a determined development guideline through this water channel and green fabrication to sustainable development of the community. o In light of this concept, the road network in down town commercial zone is re-arranged to penetrate more greenery through pedestrian walkways omitting the internal vehicular roads. o The peripheral road perceived as 'Autonomous vehicle route' to engrave the concept of net zero energy consumption in urban context.
Removal of hard surfaces with more permeable walkways, this entire down town along with the adjacent water landscape will able to handle the 'flash flood' phenomena which is a tricky one for this context. An entire connected green thus will be a soak-able sponge as well as be able to treat the 'heat Island effect' those usually commercial blocks in downtown face.
