Our proposed design is the result of extensive studies on historical background and social, economic and urban conditions of Sudbury, as well as reviewing the master plan of the city in order to fully understand the limitations and facilities of the city and the views of residents, stakeholders and influential people. Based on the principles of sustainability, which include energy conservation, harmony with nature, the establishment of social justice and holism, an area was selected as the study area that includes the major landmarks and Sudbury's potentials in relation to the city center. Therefore, based on the dissatisfaction of residents and restrictions in the city center, the location of the city train station was moved to two other strategic points, considering the proximity to the city bus line, adjacency to the main city road, having enough space for future development, not disturbing urban texture and non-interference with urban traffic. These two new stations have the role of both collector and distributor inside and outside of the city for two types of light and heavy transportation systems, where it is no longer possible for the suburban train to pass through the center of the city.
In order to practice the principles of sustainability and respect the site's history, the existing railway lines in the urban context are preserved. In order to reduce operating costs, they are reutilized as the transportation system infrastructure for the suggested LRT and as an alternative for urban trains. Through this, apart from reducing traffic generated by city trains, a safer and more compatible transportation system with urban and pedestrian space is used which also has the potential to be developed in different parts of the city in future phases. The selected route of the LRT line is on the old railway lines and for easy access and connection from city center to its surroundings, a recreational and tourism loop is proposed to connect the identified landmarks. The proposed LRT route passes through these landmarks and connects the design area from east to Arena, considering its re-allocation. In order to increase the attractiveness of the city and increase the desire of citizens to use the recreational route, as well as the optimal use of the potentials of Sudbury, it is also suggested that a part of the route passes above Ramsey Lake. And finally, by passing through landmarks, including Minnow Lake Trail, Minnow Lake Park, Carmichael Playground, Laurentian University, ldylwylde Golf & Country Club, Ramsey Lake Boat Launch, Sudbury Canoe Club, William Ramsey Cruise Boat, Bell Park, Beach of Ramsey & Ramsey Lake Skating Path, it reaches the design area and eventually is connected to the two proposed new stations. With the purpose of connecting the project area to the city, various recreational stations with stunning views, landscape and user-attracting functions such as the forest park, green hills, Ramsey Lake, Minnow Lake, etc., are defined. Accordingly, there are a number of mobile restaurants in the design area, which makes it possible for users of the central space to access other recreational stations through axes with attractive and stunning views while having a meal from the first station within the area. The proposed recreational stations are as follows :
1. First Recreational Station : A multi-purpose center and the origin of recreational stations; located within the project area with the possibility of implementation in the first phase of the project This station, which includes the entire design area, is divided into 5 sections, including green space, commercial-service space, mixed residential-hospitality use space, urban open space and the space dedicated to various modes of transportation such as pedestrian, vehicle, bicycle and LRT. In order to show the history and background of the project area, the old railway lines are preserved and reutilized as green paths that are redesigned with different outdoor flooring materials. The green train carriages situated on these routes are used to hold weekly or monthly handicraft markets. By this means, the passage of time is shown to users.
2. Second Recreational Station: Rest area and forest restaurant ; located above the forest park with the possibility of implementation in the first phase of the project This station is located on hill top in the middle of a forest park, where a hotel, a timber lodge and a forest restaurant which is the second branch of the central restaurant, is located. The two stations are connected through a green path with attractive views.
3. Third Recreational Station: Rest area and coastal restaurant ; located near Minnow Lake with the possibility of implementation in the first phase of the project This station is a rest area and is another branch of the central restaurant which is located on ttle beach near Minnow Lake shore and is close to other landmarks such as Minnow Lake Trail, Minnow Lake Park and Carmichael Playground.
4. Fourth Recreational Station : Sports complex; adjacent to the northern part of Ramsey Lake and LRt axis with the possibility of implementation in the second phase of the project This station is located near Ramsey Lake and is easily connected to City Center and other Recreational Stations via the LRT axis. It is a recreational place where all kinds of sports, especially water sports take place.
5. Fifth Recreational Station: Marine themed restaurant ; located on Ramsey Lake with the possibility of implementation in the third phase of the project This station is located on Ramsey Lake &has many attractive rest spots & a marine themed restaurant that is equipped with a leisure route and the LRT axis which is connected to city landmarks such as Laurentian University, ldyiwyide Golf and Country Club, Boat Launch, Canoe Club, William Ramsey Cruise Boat and Bell Park.
6. Sixth Recreational Station : Arena multi-purpose center; located at the northeastern part of Ramsey Lake and adjacent to the LRT axis with the possibility of implementation in the first phase of the project. The Arena multi-purpose project is proposed to be located in this station due to its adjacency to Ramsey Lake and the possibility ofi exploiting it, easy access to LRT on old railway lines and reducing infrastructure costs, the possibility of access from city's main and secondary roads.
