This design sets out to create a residential feeling that emulates the character of old Quebec. It is in two neighbourhoods in the interests of scale and liveability. Fortuitously the competition requires that the market area be situated between the two.
Each is spatial entity. The buildings are designed unison. Their forms and details are linked. They wrap around the spaces and thus set up the spatial quality. They form an integral mass. The sports center is part of that mass. The market stalls and the market building, whilst providing a counterpoint of colour and materials, continue the curved formation.
The massing is articulated into the spatial effect of the residential neighbourhoods. Careful consideration is given to vistas from surrounding buildings. There will be a view of Bassin Louise and the St. Lawrence River from the intermodal station. Buildings on the ramparts, overlooking, will be treated to a view of dormers and roof lines surrounding the basin. The buildings around Carre Parent will see across into the basin and beyond.
On the street side of this development the buildings set up a rhyhm that emulates a manner of street space and scape that is so enjoyable in older parts of the city. They are set back from the street 8M separated by a moat and sidewalk. The typology of the detailing has been inspired into a contemporary idiom by the details of the Ursuline Convent beyond the ramparts: particularly by the roofs, dormers and octagons.
The total development of Vieux-Port is in progress. There will be more buildings on Saint-Andre and Abraham Martin. The tempo of the street facades of this design are related in scale to the existing buildings and it is anticipated the new infill across the street will respond, spatially and typologically, in kind.
