Traces, lines, surfaces
The traces of peoples and their past constructions form layers of lines that are superimposed on each other. While some persist, others have faded away.
On the plot where the new contours of PHI Contemporary are inscribed, this link between past, present and future inspired the first lines and surfaces compos-ing this project. Like a palimpsest, we read this place through its layers and successive traces, seeking to create a dialogue between what used to be, what is and what will be.
By decomposing and analyzing the multiple subtractions identifying the plot, the project finds its origins in the traces of the past. From an empirical selection of these lines, some have reappeared back in the plans of the new PHI Contemporary.
Beyond the "physical" traces of the place, coming from the evolution of the city's urbanization, new lines were added, those of a collective memory. Before the arrival of settlers on these lands, the Iroquois, this "people of the long houses", built with the "déjà-là". Collecting fragments of tree bark, joining them together, they composed large linear structures that gave body and life to the community. Settling temporarily, next to resources, a cyclical idea of evolution among the Iroquois was central to their way of living. Their homes were designed as linear sequences of modular rooms gathered around fire pits, large shared spaces that represented the cores of their houses.
In the same way, the PHI Contemporary becomes a structure for the community that weaves points of contact with its environment to form a place of intense exchange and interaction. Its architecture uses its evocative power to create a link between the past form of the "Longhouse", the physical relationship to the urban block through its evolutions, and the scope of the functional program.
Thus, recalling that the founding principles of a native and vernacular architecture encourages us to imagine an inclusive, decolonized, open, incisive future for PHI Contemporary. A bridge that could strengthen the link between art and society, through its ability to question reality and to inspire new narratives.
