From the outside, the School of Architecture is a rigid form not awaiting to be expanded or transformed. Some aspects of its functional organization would however gain in being re-qualified from the inside. The proposed intervention aims towards the creation of a parallel body in duality with the rigidity of the existing envelope. It aims towards the creation of subterranean spaces as means of junction of the School of Architecture's existing circulation spaces. The new program will be inserted in parallel with the existing under the Petit-Séminaire's courtyard and will expand outwards towards the parking spaces on Port-Dauphin. The intervention aims at maintaining the external image of the White building; an external minimalist gesture and new internal guidelines with significant impact on the existing functional program.
Let's imagine the creation of an independent parallel program, in complement with the existing functions; the creation of two different entities in coexistence in the same environment.
On the Côte de la Fabrique, a trench appears as a discreet gesture that marks the main entrance and invites the user a level below the existing hall, to a new grand two-level space. Distinct accesses guide the user to the public amphitheatre spaces (social: extraversion) or to the private spaces of the School of Architecture (thought: introversion). New complementary spaces are transplanted along this new component, becoming a major turnpoint in new program and bind together the various strategic points of the existing building. The fluid circulations which articulate from this new heart pierce through the existing envelope to strengthen the nerve centers, strategically identified.
At its extremity, this line emerges into two multifunction rooms which offer flexible spaces, and finishes with a natural agora and green roofs assures a green link between the School, Montmorency Park and St-Lawrence River.
