TITLE: The sculpture of green building
THEME: Facture and remediation within the landscape: balancing the needs of artists, art and public art education with green building design.
VISION: Typically, one would normally associate the idea of a vision to an individual - especially a vision related to a piece of architectural sculpture.
For the Visual Arts Education Facility, our design team determined that the vision had to arise through discourse as well as discord. The vision is an orchestration of the chaos resulting from collision of the status quo, fresh ideas, creative solutions, new technologies and timeless traditions of communal building.
The vision was driven by the desire to rethink our entire way of building from the obvious to the banal. Every aspect of the building was scrutinized and then scrutinized again: Can we save on water consumption by making all washrooms unisex? Can we eliminate circulation? Is there a need to build at all? Where does interior space end and exterior space begin?
Our vision is not that of a competition of ideas but an ongoing debate about green buildings. Competition does not lead to green buildings; an interplay of varying perspectives does.
Our vision can be summarized from the following definitions of team members:
"Every green building is unique."
"A green building is, above all else, a healthy building."
"Green building is an overall approach to the design process that is extremely sensitive and attuned to all elements of design including site, environmental and human needs, economy, society, etc. As well, emphasis on creating a greener community by means of education should be one of the many goals of the design."
"Green building: a space which attempts to be fully self sufficient while making use, but is not restricted to, surrounding materials that are native and unique to that specific area. Also, a green building should reflect new uses for energy efficient materials that can be incorporated into the architectural language of all building types and not just green building."
"A green building will facilitate education, emphasizing both environmental and economic sustainability and societal wellbeing and maturity."

The Team B "person" seems to be an artist, with the design being carried by form.
Unique design and the jury as a whole responded well. Fantastic creativity demonstrating how lyrical a building might be. One of best features is the welcoming atmosphere.
Strong visual presentation. The Model was exemplary. It gives you the feeling of being on the site in its finished state. A very clearly recycled building in so many ways.
Very site-crafted and therefore designed in direct response to site. Small footprint that blends into landscape so nicely & effectively. However, site outside of guidelines.
There was a strong focus on form. More solid background on the green building components would have been helpful.
Impressed with the integration of art and green building concepts.
There wasn't a clear sense of how I would feel inside and how it would function. But there was indication that the spaces perform multiple functions which was good.
The Integrated Design process suggested that the team did not reach out very broadly. There was a feeling that the building was designed by one person - showing a stronger dominance than integration.
The building dimensions weren't clearly marked but seemed to be somewhat oversized.
