The mission of Urban ReVenue is to design a space that provides new life to existing bus-stop structures through innovative use of recycled materials. The space is also conceived to communicate to people local to the bus stop the importance and impact of waste on our environment. the idea of 'revenue' unfolds in that users can physically see and feel the impact of the new bus stop design on their local environment, allowing people to realize their own status as a stakeholder in the future of the health of their environment. The bus shelter also holds its own in the sense of being a 'venue' - being a showcase for these principles. a signage board located next to bus scheduling screen can inform commuters of the various design elements and how they contribute.
Through the use of a new support structure, the bus shelter can become multi-modal, adapting itself in relation to the changing seasons. With various elements connecting into the structure, the aesthetic visibly changes throughout the year. While creating an increase in required maintenance, the bus shelter can be modified within the framework of a manageable schedule (such as the already existing yearly set-up/take- down schedule of bixi bike stations in the city).
Summer - the original bus shelter becomes more open, allowing better airflow, contributing to the reduction of excess heat. Combined with shading provided by vines growing over the new structure, the reduction in temperature can be immediately felt.
Winter - the bus shelter becomes more enclosed, inhibiting wind flow to the inside, creating a more comfortable environment. People are already dressed warmly, therefore heating is not necessary. A reduction in wind chill however makes the waiting experience more pleasant in winter. With the vines cleared away during this season, Solar gain increases to allow for more warmth while waiting during the day.
To assist user experience, a live schedule board would be affixed to the new structure, linking in to existing systems within the city. To allow commuters more time to relax, a color-coded lighting system would be integrated into the structure, changing colors depending on the required readiness of the user. (white - relaxing, green - bus arriving in a few moments - please prepare, and red - bus is approaching)
(Competitor's text)
The jury was particularly sensitive to the approach that led to this project, rather than to its aesthetic qualities. A series of rotations, additions and transformations manage to literally "absorb" the bus shelter. The resulting project is as tough as it is resistant. The public space is really busy and the users are invited to reappropriate the public space.
