8 classrooms on 2 levels
Area: 15,111 sq. ft.
Volume: 160,840 cu. ft.
The orientation of the classrooms and the location of the common services strongly influenced our choice of design.
Indeed, we wanted all the classrooms to face south-east so that the children could enjoy the sun as much as possible, without it bothering them.
In order to avoid a too long strip of classrooms, we placed them on two levels.
Because we wanted sheltered entrances and also covered areas to provide shelter for the children when it rains, we placed more of the classrooms on the second floor. The classroom block, upstairs, projects, therefore, over the entrances to create shelters.
The classrooms were not stacked. We wanted to express more clearly the different cycles. Thus, we have the first cycle on the first floor while on the floor the library is flanked by the 2nd and 3rd cycle. We also wanted to avoid a source of noise that we would have had if we had placed the 2nd and 3rd cycle classes above the 1st cycle.
The lobbies are placed in such a way that one can go directly to the common services, the grouping room, the cafeteria, the classrooms.
The recreation room is easily accessible from the classrooms, but is set back. This grouping room opens onto the playground which becomes an extension of this room.
In order to express the place occupied by the dining room, we have lowered the surface occupied by it slightly.
Generally speaking, we wanted to clearly express, on the outside, the different functions of the school. Thus, one can easily read the classes and the different cycles.
One can also easily locate the administration and the kindergarten. As well as the grouping room. The entrances are also well asserted.
Structure: laminated wood. We made this choice for several reasons:
1. The architectural treatment we chose wanted the structure to be visible on the outside. Because wood reacts well to cold, because it is not conductive, it became easy and economical to use wood beams and columns.
2. Wood is a material that promotes a more intimate, warmer atmosphere. It is a material that is often found in the residence. We believe that the environment in which these children will have to live must reflect the atmosphere of the residence.
3. The wood structure has a very good resistance to fire.
4. It is an economical structure that can be easily assembled. We have, in fact, modulated our plan and elevations well to ensure that the assemblies will be simple and easy to execute.

Pros
- Clear organization with good atmosphere.
- Well defined orientation.
- Well-organized site plan - presence of windbreaks and covered courtyards to be recommended.
- Good layout of entrances, services and communal areas.
- The fact that the classrooms are not stacked on top of each other is noteworthy from the point of view of sound insulation.
Cons
- The difference in level between the cafeteria and the common room is to be regretted.
- The location and size of the stairs should be reconsidered.
- The use of skylights as a secondary source of lighting in the classrooms is treated inconsistently
